OPEN GATE

OPEN GATE is an academic enrichment program for the brightest children with the greatest potential who are also from low-come families… and at very high risk.

OPEN GATE elementary school students are provided with daily tutoring in English Literacy by professionally trained university students. Many tutors are studying to be teachers. They are carefully selected, professionally trained and paired with students who often share their background, family language, and/or life experience.

OPEN GATE provides one-on-one tutoring, school supplies, educational materials and fieldtrips for its students, and parent classes for adults in their families. In OPEN GATE, students learn that academics, arts, and cultural activities like chess, music, poetry, theater, geometry, science and computers are more exciting, rewarding and compelling than the gang activity in their neighborhoods.

OPEN GATE students come from neighborhoods where the dropout rate is high and they are surrounded by drugs, crime, gangs, and violence that serve as outlets for the boredom they experience in school. Hence, the very same qualities that render these bright youngsters capable of becoming the scholastic, professional, artistic, and community leaders of tomorrow also render them equally capable of becoming gang leaders.

OPEN GATE provides the means for these students to land on the side of brilliance and get on track to higher education.
