Parents' PLACE
A place for parents in their child's academic success

HDF recognizes the crucial role that parents play in a child’s academic success, and ultimately in their future. Our Parents’ PLACE program offers a strong curriculum for parents in the evening that is aligned with their child’s schoolwork to foster a greater level of parent awareness about the skills the child learns in the classroom. One of the unique foundations of Parents’ PLACE is that it trains parents not only in how to foster good study skills, but also teaches parents some of the academic content that their child is learning in school.

Many of the children we serve are from families that live well below the poverty line in homes where English is generally not spoken. Language barriers, cultural differences, and a lack of formal parent education are formidable challenges that prevent parents from participating in their child’s education. Without parental support and involvement, the population of children that we serve is at high risk of falling prey to the many temptations of gangs, drugs, and school dropout rates that are so prevalent in many of the surrounding neighborhoods.
